Goceano

A WORLD TO DISCOVER

Located in central-northern Sardinia, the Goceano includes the municipalities of Illorai, Burgos, Esporlatu, Bottida, Bono, Anela, Bultei, Benetutti, and Nule.

The river Tirso runs through the Goceano mountain chain borders it. The bighest peak is Sa Punta Manna of Mount Rasu (1.259 m a.s.l), one of the bighest peaks in Sardinia after the Massif of Gennargentu and the Mount Limbara.

The relevant naturalistic importance of this area is given by the beautiful, wide wooded areas and by the Sardinian-Corsican endemic species which are quite rare. From a bistorical-archeological point of view, 340 sites have been counted in a census, many of which have scientific relevance.

During the Roman age in the San Saturnino plain the town of Lesa was built. The presence of hot springs in this area allowed the construction of thermal baths whose “tepidarium” still exists.

Tho the Giudicati period belong some rural churches and the castle of the Goceano, built up to protect the southern borders ofthe Reign of Torres.

In the XVIII century, the Goceano witnessed important Sardinian historical and political events. Giovanni Maria Angioj, a citizen from Bono, led the rebellion of Sardinias against the feudal system (and was therefore nomed “AlterNos”).
